THE following clear statement of the events that marked the close of the 1260 years of papal supremacy is taken from ‘‘Alison’s History of Europe,” pages 108 and 109: — ‘‘Joseph Bonaparte, brother to Napoleon, had been appointed ambassador at the court of Rome; hut as he was deemed too honorable a man to he intrusted with the management of political intrigue, Generals Duphot and Sherlock were ordered to accompany him. The French embassy, under their direction, soon became a center of revolutionary action ; and the numerous ardent characters with which the Italian cities ever abound, flocked there as to a common focus, whence the next great explosion of democratic power was to be expected. On Dec. 27, 1797, a crowd assembled in Rome and moved to the palace of the French ambassador, where they exclaimed, ‘Vive la Republique Roman and invoked the aid of the French in planting the tricolor flag on the Capitol. In this emergency, the papal ministers sent a regiment of dragoons to prevent a sortie of the revolutionists from the ambassador’s palace; and these troops gave notice to the insurgents that their orders were to allow no one to leave the place. Upon this, Duphot, indignant at being restrained by the pontifical forces, drew his sword, rushed down the staircase, and put himself at the head of a hundred and fifty armed Roman democrats, who were contending with the dragoons in the court-yard of the palace. He was instantly killed by a volley from the papal soldiers. A violent scuffle ensued, and after passing several hours in the greatest alarm, Joseph Bonaparte, with his suite, retired to Florence.

This catastrophe, however, obviously occasioned by the revolutionary schemes which were on foot and in agitation at the residence of the French ambassador, did literally take place within the precincts of his palace, and was, therefore, a violation of the law of nations. The directory declared war against Rome with a promptness that showed how eagerly they had sought the quarrel, and Berthier received orders to advance instantly upon the ecclesiastical dominions. That general, at the head of eighteen thousand veterans, entered Ancona, Jan. 25, 1798, where he completed a revolution that had broken out a few days before, secured its fortress, crossed the Apennines, and Feb. 10, appeared in front of the Eternal City. The U-pope (Pius VI.), who was now more than eighty years of age, shut himself up in the Vatican, and spent night and day at the foot of the al tar imploring protection from Heaven, Berthier might easily have taken possession of Rome at once, but he preferred to avail himself of the sorry pretext of resorting to that step only when the inhabitants invoked his aid; and he en camped without the walls for five days, while the revolutionists within were completing their preparations. Feb. 15, all was arranged; the revolutionists, in open revolt, passed through the streets, invited the French to enter, and Berthier hoisted the flag of the republic over the walls of Rome.

“But the directory did not stop at the mere conquest of the city. They ordered the pope to retire into Tuscany, dismiss his Swiss guard, supply their place with French soldiers, and dispossess himself of his temporal authority. He replied with the firmness of a martyr ‘I am prepared for every kind of disgrace; but as supreme pontiff, I am resolved to die in the exercise of all my powers. You may employ force; you may become masters of my body, but not of my soul. Free in the region where it is placed, it fears neither the events nor the sufferings of this life. I stand on the threshold of another world, where I shall soon be sheltered from the violence and impiety of this.’ Force was, nevertheless, employed by the French. The aged pontiff was dragged from the altar in his palace, his repositories were plundered, the very rings torn from his fingers, and he himself, with only a few domestics for attendants, was conveyed into Tuscany, amid the brutal jests and sacrilegious songs of the French dragoons. The subsequent treatment of this venerable man was still more disgraceful to the republic. Fearful that his virtues and sufferings might produce an influence in Italy unfavorable to the interests of France, the directory ordered him to be removed to Leghorn, in March, 1799. After remaining there for a time, he was compelled to renew his journey, was conveyed across the Apennines and the Alps, exposed, by traveling at night, to the cold of those elevated regions; and lie at length reached Valence, where he expired Aug. 29, in the eighty-second year of his age and the twenty-fourth of his pontificate.” ADVENTIST REVIEW AND SABBATH HERALD, JULY 18, 1895, PAGE 273.

AS BEING SEDITIOUS TO THE ROMAN GOVERNMENT. DANIEL 9:25-27 PILATE OWED HIS GOVERNORSHIP OF JUDEA, ONLY TO THE FAVOR OF TIBERIUS, HE WAS TRYING TO GAIN FAVOR WITH TIBERIUS WHO WAS THE UNCLE, OF HIS WIFE.

13. DANIEL 11:23 “And after the __________ _________ with him he shall ________ _________: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a ______ __________.” THE POWER RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR LORD’S CRUCIFIXION HAD ENTERED INTO A LEAGUE. A 192 YEARS EARLIER. THE ALLIANCE WITH JUDAH, WAS MADE IN 161 B.C.. AT THAT TIME THE ROMANS WERE A SMALL PEOPLE. AS THE PROPHECY SAYS, BUT THEY BEGAN TO “WORK DECEITFULLY” AS FORETOLD IN VERSE 23. THE ANGEL TRACED THE STORY OF ROME IN VERSE 14-22; BUT NOW IN VERSE 23 THE ANGEL GOES BACK TO THE MILESTONE FOR THE JEWISH PEOPLE. ROME ENTERED INTO A LEAGUE, AND A FRINDSHIP ALLIANCE WITH JUDEA. THE JEWS LED BY THE HIGH PRIEST ENTERED THIS LEAGUE WITH MUCH ENTHUSIASM. SO WE ARE GOING BACK OVER ROME’S HISTORY FROM A DIFFERENT VIEW, WITH MORE HISTORY.

DANIEL 11:24 “He shall ________ __________ even upon the __________ ____________ of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a _________.” POSING AS DEFENDERS OF THE WEAK, THE ROMAN’S. SOON BECAME “THE WORLD’S NATIONAL REFEREE.” FROM NORTHERN AFRICA TO ENGLAND, FROM SPAIN TO PALESTINE. WHOLE COUNTRIES WERE BEQUEATHED TO THE ROMAN SENATE. PAX ROMANA EXTENDED TO THE CIVILIZED WORLD. THEY ENTERED PEACEABLE AND TOOK OVER. WE NOTICE AT THE END OF THIS VERSE IT SAYS FOR A TIME. WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED, THAT A TIME IN PROPHECY IS? 360 DAYS OR YEARS.

RECOGNIZING THAT A “TIME” IN PROPHECY EQUALS A YEAR OF 360 DAYS, IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT FROM 31 B.C., THE YEAR IN WHICH EGYPT CAPITULATED, UNTIL CONSTANTINE MOVED HIS SEAT OF GOVERNMENT FROM THE CITY OF ROME TO CONSTANTINOPLE IN A.D. 330. MAKES EXCTLY 360 YEARS. THERE IS NO ZERO YEAR. YOU GO FROM 1 B.C. TO 1 A.D.

STARTING FROM SEPTEMBER 2, 31 B.C. AT THE BATTLE OF ACTIUM. AUGUSTUS DATES HIS REIGN TO A.D. 330. ADD 360 YEARS IT BRINGS US TO THE YEAR THAT CONSTANTINE REMOVED THE CAPITAL FORM ROME AND MOVED IT TO CONSTANTINOPLE. DURING MOST OF THIS 360 YEARS OCTAVIAN, CAESAR AUGUSTUS, MARK ANTONY, CLEOPATRA WERE IN POWER.

15. WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THIS 360 YEARS IN THE NEXT 3 VERSES, DANIEL 11:25-27. WE ARE GOING BACK AND LOOK MORE AT THESE ROMAN LEADERS; WE COVERED IN VERSE 14-22. HOW ROME CONTINUED TO GROW, BY USING DIPLOMACY AND WARFARE. DANIEL 11:25 “And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the _________ of the _________ with a great army; and the _______ of the _______ shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.”

“During most of those 360 years the Empire was marked by intrigue. Before Octavian, Caesar Augustus, came to power, there was keen rivalry between him and his brother—in—law Mark Antony, who also had come under the spell of Cleopatra. These two rivals are described in verses 26 and 27.” Unfolding Daniel’s Prophecies page 143 VERSE 26 “Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.” VERSE 27 “And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak ________ at _______ _______; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.” “while they could outwardly enjoy sitting at the same table, they will lie to each other with advantage to neither”. Unfolding Daniel’s Prophecies page 143 Octavia, sister of Octavius, declared she had married Antony in the hope of keeping these two men as friends. True to the prophecy, however, it did not prosper. In a very short time Antony and Cleopatra, for whom he had divorced his wife, were both dead, He by a self— inflicted dagger and she by the bite of an asp (probably an Egyptian cobra) smuggled into her presence in a basket of fruit. IN THE BATTLE OF ACTIUM IN 31 B.C. ANTONY WAS DEFEATED, AND OCTAVIA, TAKING THE ALMOST DEIFIED TITLE OF AUGUSTUS BECAME RULER OF THE ROMAN WORLD.

16. DANIEL 11:28 “Then shall he _________ into ______ ________ with _______ ________; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and ________ to _____ own __________.” “IF WE ARE RIGHT IN APPLYING THESE VERSES TO ROME, THEN WE SHOULD NOTE WITH CARE TWO USES OF THE WORD “RETURN”. THE FIRST RELATED TO OCTAVIAN. RETURNING AFTER HIS CONQUEST OF EYGPT. HE CAME BACK “WITH GREAT RICHES, SO VALUABLE IT IS CLAMED, THAT THE VALUE OF MONEY DROPPED 50 PERCENT WHILE THE PRICE OF PRODUCTS INCREASED 100 PERCENT. YET THERE WAS ANOTHER, MORE SIGNIFICANT “RETURN” WHEN TITUS RETURNED COVERED WITH GLORY, HAVING OVERTHROWN JUDAH AND SCATTERED THE JEWS EVERYWHERE, IT CERTAINLY IS TRUE THAT HIS HEART WAS “AGAINST THE HOLY CONENANT.” Unfolding Daniel’s Prophecies page 143, 144.

DANIEL 11:29-30 “At the _______ ___________ he shall ________, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.” THE 360 YEARS END, THAT WAS SPOKEN OF IN VERSE 24, “FOR A TIME”. CONSTANTINE MOVED THE CAPITAL OF ROME TO CONSTANTINOPLE. THE BARBARIAN’S INVADED ROME, THE ROMAN SENATE SENT THE OFFICAL EMBLEMS OF GOVERNMENT TO CONSTANTINOPLE. THIS WAS THE BEGINNING OF CHANGE FROM PAGAN ROME TO PAPAL ROME. DANIEL 11:30 “For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and __________, and have indignation against the _________ ____________: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.” THIS IS WHEN TRANSUBSTANTIATION AND THE MASS CAME INTO THE WORSHIP. WITH THIS CHANGE THE WORLD, CLOAKED WITH A FORM OF RIGHTOUSNESS, WALKED INTO THE CHURCH. THE COMPROMISE BETWEEN PAGANISM AND CHRISTINAITY RESULTED IN THE DEVELOPEMENT OF “THE MAN OF SIN.” GREAT CONTRAVERSY 50 JUDE 3 “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”

18. DANIEL 11:31 “And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall __________ the ___________ of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the ____________ that maketh __________.”

“THE BREAKUP OF THE EMPIRE OF THE CAESARS OPENED THE WAY FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE PAPACY, WHICH DID INDEED “POLLUTE THE SANCTUARY OF STRENGTH” (VERSE 31). IN OTHER WORDS, PAPAL WORSHIP CORRUPTED THE TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF CHRIST AS OUR INTERCESSOR IN THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY. MANY TEACHINGS SUCH AS THE DOCTRINE OF TRANSUBTANTIATION UNDERMINED THE DOCTRINE OF THE FINISHED SACRIFICE OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS. ROMAN CATHOLICISM CLAIMS THAT “CHRIST IS OFFERED EVER DAY ON OUR ALTERS.”

“IN PLACE OF THE CONTINUAL MINISTRY OF CHRIST, A HUMAN PRIESTHOOD WAS ESTABLISHED WHICH CLAIMED THE POWER TO FORGIVE SINS AND OPEN THE GATES OF HEAVEN TO THE TRANSGRESSOR. THIS WAS INDEED “THE ABOMINATION THAT MAKETH DESOLATE.” (VERSE 31)” UNFOLDING DANIEL’S PROPHECIES 148, 149

19. DANIEL 11:32 “And such as do ________ against the ________ shall he corrupt by __________: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” “… The Eastern Emperor Justinian, eager to make War against the Vandals, sought for the approval and cooperation of the Bishop of Rome. In that year he wrote a letter, which later became official, to Epiphanius. In this letter he called the Bishop of Rome “the Head of All the Holy Churches,” and later “the Corrector of Heretics.” The Arian Goths, having conquered Rome, were determined to rule. ‘They were subdued, however, by armies ordered by the Pope in A.D. 538. This marks the date for the beginning of the long prophetic period of 1260 years—538 A.D -1798 A.D. which has been recognized by Bible scholars for almost 200 years.” Unfolding Daniel’s Prophecies 149

DANIEL 11:33 “And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the _________, and by ________, by _________, and by ________, many ________.” THE TERRIBLE PERSECUTIONS WERE INSTITUTED NOT BY PAGAN ROME, BUT SO CALLED CHRISTIANS. UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF PRELATES AND BISHOPS. THE “MANY DAY” PARALLELS THE 1260 DAYS MENTIONED IN DANIEL 7:25. THE EFFEFT OF THIS PERSECUTION WOULD BE TO PURIFY GOD’S TRUE PEOPLE. THIS WAS THE TIME WE STUDIED ABOUT 538 A.D. TO 1798 A.D. OR THE 1260 YEARS.

21. DANIEL 11:34 “Now when they shall fall, they shall be _________ with a __________ _________: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.” THEIR TIME WAS CUT SHORT, WHICH WAS A LITTLE HELP FOR GOD’S PEOPLE. AT THAT TIME (1798) A FRENCH ARMY, LEAD BY GENERAL BERTHIER, ENTERED ROME AND TOOK POPE PIUS VI PRISONER, AND HE DIED IN EXILE. THROUGH A NEW POPE WAS SOON AFTERWARD ELECTED, THE PAPAL HIERARCHY HAS NEVER SINCE BEEN ABLE TO WIELD THE POWER WHICH IT BEFORE POSSESED. “PERSECUTION OF THE CHURCH DID NOT CONTINUE THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE 1260 YEARS. IN GOD’S MERCY THEY WERE HELPED AND IT WAS CUT SHORT.” GREAT CONTRAVERSY 266

THE FRENCH REVOLUTION ENDED IN 1798, WITH TWO YEARS OF ATHEISM, IN WHICH THE GODDESS OF REASON RULED. THIS PEROID WAS KNOWN AS “THE REIGN OF TERROR”, THERE WAS MUCH BLOOD SHED. THEY SOUGHT TO ABOLIISH CHRISTIAN RELIGON AND THE BIBLE. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION ENDED IN 1798. THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION WAS JUST A FEW YEARS BEFORE, THESE TWO REVOLUTIONS SOUNDED THE DEATH NAIL OF “THE DIVINE RIGHTS OF KINGS” THE PAPAL POWER WHICH FOR 1260 YEARS HAD LEAD INTO CAPTIVITY WAS NOW TAKEN INTO CAPTIVITY REVELATION.13:10.

22. DANIEL 11:35 “And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to _______, and to make them _________, even to the ________ of the ________: because it is yet for a time appointed.” THIS IS IN REFERANCE TO THE 1260 YEARS PEROID WE HAVE ALREADY COVERED. THIS 1260 YEARS HELPED TO PURIFY GOD’S TRUE PEOPLE. THEY WERE PURGED OF THEIR SINS AND WASHED WHITE IN THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB. GOD HAS A TIME APPOINTED WHEN HE WILL COME FOR HIS TRUE PEOPLE.

23. READ (DANIEL 11:36 – 39) THESE VERSES IS TALKING ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PAPAL ROME. ALSO PAUL POINTS OUT THE DANGER OF THIS POWER IN HIS TIME. 2 THESSALONIANS 2:3,4,7. “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that _________ of __________ be revealed, the son of perdition; 4Who opposeth and exalteth ________ ________ all that is called __________, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.” THIS VISION HARMONIZES WITH THE OTHER VISIONS OF DANIEL 2, 7, 8, 9, 11. THEY ALL SHOW A PICTURE OF CERTAIN POWERS AND SYSTEMS AND SHOW HOW THEY PLAY A ROLE IN THE GREAT CONTROVERSY BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. “Even at that early date he (PAUL) saw, creeping into the church, errors that would prepare the way for the development of the papacy. Little by little, at first in stealth and silence, and then more openly as it increased in strength and gained control of the minds of men, the mystery of iniquity carried forward its deceptive and blasphemous work. Almost imperceptibly the customs of heathenism found their way into the Christian church. The spirit of compromise and conformity was restrained for a time by the fierce persecutions which the church endured under paganism. But as persecution ceased, and Christianity entered the courts and palaces of kings, she laid aside the humble simplicity of Christ and his apostles for the pomp and pride of pagan priests and rulers; and in place of the requirements of God, she substituted human theories and traditions.” GREAT CONTRAVERSY 49

24. DANIEL 11:37 “Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the _________ of ____________, nor regard any god: for he shall _________ ___________ above all.”. READ 2 TIMOTHY 4:1 – 4 MEN WILL GO AFTER TEACHINGS OF MEN, TURN AWAY FROM TRUTH. “Before accepting any doctrine or precept, we should demand a plain "Thus saith the Lord" in its support. Satan is constantly endeavoring to attract attention to man in the place of God. He leads the people to look to bishops, to pastors, to professors of theology, as their guides, instead of searching the Scriptures to learn their duty for themselves. Then, by controlling the minds of these leaders, he can influence the multitudes according to his will.” GREAT CONTRAVERSY 595

25. DANIEL 11:38 “But in his estate shall he honour the ________ of forces: and a god whom his _______ ______ _____ shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.” IN 1792 – 1794 FRANCE TURNED TO ATHEISM AND THE WORSHIP OF “THE GOD OF REASON”. THE REFORMATION AT THIS TIME WAS CALLING PEOPLE BACK TO THE BIBLE. FOR THIS THEY WERE PUT TO DEATH, BY THE ROMAN CHURCH.

“When the goddess was brought into the convention, the orator took her by the hand, and turning to the assembly said: "Mortals, cease to tremble before the powerless thunders of a God whom your fears have created. Henceforth acknowledge no divinity but Reason. I offer you its noblest and purest image; if you must have idols, sacrifice only to such as this. . . . Fall before the august senate of freedom, veil of Reason. The goddess, after being embraced by the president, was mounted on a magnificent car, and conducted, amidst an immense crowd, to the cathedral of Notre Dame, to take the place of the Deity. Then she was elevated on the high altar, and received the adoration of all present. This was followed, not long afterward, by the public burning of the Bible. And "the popular society of the museum entered the hall of the municipality, exclaiming, Vive la Raison! and carrying on the top of a pole the half-burned remains of several books, among others the breviaries of the Old and New Testaments, which 'expiated in a great fire,' said the president, 'all the fooleries which they have made the human race commit. It was popery that had begun the work which atheism was completing. The policy of Rome had wrought out those conditions, social, political, and religious, that were hurrying France on to ruin. A writer, speaking of the horrors of the Revolution, says: "Those excesses are in truth to be charged upon the throne and the church." In strict justice they are to be charged upon the church. Popery had poisoned the minds of kings against the Reformation, as an enemy to the crown, an element of discord that would be fatal to the peace and harmony of the nation. It was the genius of Rome that by this means inspired the direst cruelty and the most galling oppression which proceeded from the throne. GC 276, 277.

26. DANIEL 11:39 “Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to _____ _______ _________, and shall ________ the ________ for ___________.” PREVIOUS TO THE REVOLUTION THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH AND A FEW LAND LORDS OWNED TWO THIRDS FO THE LAND OF FRANCE. THE LANDED ESTATES WERE CONFISCATED AND SOLD AT AUCTION.IN SMALL PARCELS; THE SALES PROVIDED MUCH NEEDED FUNDS FOR A NEWLY APPOINTED GOVERNMENT.

“When the restraints of God's law were cast aside, it was found that the laws of man were inadequate to hold in check the powerful tides of human passion; and the nation swept on to revolt and anarchy. The war against the Bible inaugurated an era which stands in the world's history as "The Reign of Terror." Peace and happiness were banished from the homes and hearts of men. No one was secure. He who triumphed today was suspected, condemned tomorrow. Violence and lust held undisputed sway.” GREAT CONTROVERSY 282

“The cities of the kingdom were filled with scenes of horror. One party of revolutionists was against another party, and France became a vast field for contending masses, swayed by the fury of their passions.” GREAT CONTROVERSY 283

“The country was nearly bankrupt, the armies were clamoring for arrears of pay, the Parisians were starving, the provinces were laid waste by brigands, and civilization was almost extinguished in anarchy and license. All too well the people had learned the lessons of cruelty and torture which Rome had so diligently taught.” GREAT CONTROVERSY 283 ROME HAD SO TRIED TO DO AWAY WITH THE WORD OF GOD. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION WAS SHORT LIVED, THIS REVOLUTION BROUGHT IN THE STEPS TO KARL MARX AND OTHER SOCIALISM IDEAS.

27. DANIEL 11:40 “And at the ______ _____ _____ _______ shall the _______ of the ___________ push at him: and the ________ of the __________ shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.”

YOU CAN GO BACK TO YOUR CHART OF THE 2300 DAYS AND YEARS AND KNOW THAT, “THE TIME OF THE END” WAS 1798 A.D.. DANIEL 11:8, 35 IS TALKING ABOUT THE SAME TIME. DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED IN 1798? THE POPE WAS TAKEN CAPTIVE

"Power was given unto him to continue forty and two months." And, says the prophet, "I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death." And again, "He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity; he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword." The forty and two months are the same as the "time and times and the dividing of time," three years and a half, or 1260 days, of Daniel 7,--the time during which the papal power was to oppress God's people. This period, as stated in preceding chapters, began with the establishment of the papacy, A. D. 538, and terminated in 1798.
